Vaping: A suitable substitute for cigarette smoking?
October 02, 20232 min read
Many people believe that vaping is less harmful than smoking cigarettes. However, even though e-cigars do not contain all the harmful products like cigarettes, it still is not considered completely safe. No organization has produced long term safety data on electronic cigarettes. The question remains, “are electronic cigarettes a suitable substitute to cigarette smoking?”
Cigarettes are still considered a leading cause of death, killing more than 480,000 individuals per year in the United States. Cigarettes produce toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. These carcinogenic substances are found in the gummy or tar-like residue contained in the smoke.
The long term effect of cigarette smoke is a variety of mouth and throat cancers and dental diseases. Some include lung cancer and pulmonary and respiratory diseases. However, it is believed that e-cigarettes do not produce tar or the toxic gases found in cigarette smoke. They are not known to produce large quantities of cancer-causing agents and are not considered to be a risk. Modern vaporizers are built with advanced technology that delivers cleaner vapor.
Electronic cigarettes have a tank filled with e-liquids. These liquids come in a variety of mouthwatering flavors which make them attractive to teenagers. The e-liquids are also available in varying percentages of nicotine. While this is so, some e-cigarettes do not contain nicotine.
So how exactly does the e-cigarette work? The e-liquid is heated in a chamber that is battery-powered. The mist produced is vaped through a mouthpiece. Some of the batteries have been known to explode and cause damage. However, the risk is reduced in newer models.
Studies have shown that there are many health risks associated with prolonged use of cigarettes. The carcinogens can become stuck in the lungs and cause further damage. So, in came electronic cigarettes to save the day! Or so it’s believed. On one hand, e-cigarettes do not involve the burning of tobacco. They do not have most of the dangers associated with burning, however, the flavorings contained may be harmful to the lungs. Even though e-cigarettes are not safe or free of risk, to date, they are the best alternative to tobacco cigarettes.
