Studies say it’s ok to vape

E-cigarettes have been around for decades but within the last decade, its popularity has sky-rocketed in epic proportion.

Vaping keeps evolving and the more it evolves the more popular it becomes. It varies widely from one device to another in terms of its construct, size, whether an open system or closed system, or e-liquid flavor, but the concern when it comes to using these machines remains the same. What are the health impacts? As the number of persons vaping continues to increase with each passing day, the debate continues to heat up.

One of the main points of marketing for these e-cigs and vapes is that the liquids and the vapor produced contain fewer chemicals than a cigarette making them a much healthier option. Many of them even offer the option of high nicotine content to give the same taste and feeling of smoking a real cigarette. Nicotine, as we know is highly addictive, but apart from this, what else do we need to be concerned about?

Studies have shown that adverse effects reported included, but were not limited to the following:

    • Coughing
    • Mouth and lung irritation
    • Chest pain
    • Increased blood pressure
    • Increased heart rate
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting

These effects reportedly dissipated over time and may have been attributed to the body’s own temporary resistance to the introduction of vapor to the system and nicotine withdrawal for seasoned smokers. Other more serious side effects were said to may have been a result of pre-existing health conditions or long-term cigarette use.

Studies conducted by Professor Riccardo Polosa of the University of Catania, among persons in their late twenties who had never smoked or never vaped before the study, over a period of 3 to 4 years, showed no signs of lung deterioration as a result of being introduced to vaping for the duration of the study. This, however, doesn’t mean that beyond this length of time conditions could occur.

It should be duly noted that just as the craze of vaping is still in the newborn phase, so too are studies and any concrete evidence as to the effects of developing this flavorful habit. Only time will tell.
