    Juuling while schooling…what next?

The JUUL e-cigarette, one of the newest things to hit the vaping world is about the size of a flash drive. Fitting in the palm of your hand with a liquid pod about the size of your thumbnail, the Juul is the new craze.

Since being introduced in 2015, JUUL has sky-rocketed to stardom holding 55 percent of vaping market shares. JUUL shocked the world by adding nicotine salts to their liquid, giving the user the feeling of smoking a cigarette with every pull. This detail propelled JUUL to popularity among adult users and teenagers alike so much that its teen audience refers to using this device as ‘juuling’. The JUUL offers only eight flavors for a user to choose from but within those little e-liquid pods contains a fluid that has caught the attention of even the most seasoned cigarette user.

Apart from its potency, the flavors of their liquids are candy and dessert-inspired, and their devices have changeable jackets to customize the look of the vape. Although not designed to target the younger demographics, these features don’t support this claim, and while the company boasts of the lack of a lingering smell, teenage users revel in the benefit of this feature. The unadulterated truth is whereas before kids would hide to smoke a cigarette, now because of the inconspicuous design of the JUUL and its lack of a lingering scent when used, kids are juuling anywhere. Kids are using these devices anywhere in school – the bathroom, halls, school events, classrooms.

As a result of its discreet size and performance, coupled with the attractiveness of its flavors and colorful, customizable skins, students and parents may not be aware of its high nicotine content. Nicotine is extremely addictive to the adult brain, even more so for the developing brain and body of an adolescent. This continues to be a cause of major contention for school administrative bodies and government health officials who are trying to raise awareness about the use of e-cigarettes among high school and middle school kids. The CDC reports that e-cigarettes are the most commonly used product among young people, accounting for more than 2 million in 2016 alone.
